Despite a certain gay ambiance and customers, this is more of a mixed bar than a gay bar. The upstairs level is much gayer than downstairs, but even that can be mixed on some nights. Still the customers seem to get along well and are friendly, as are the bartenders. Definitely head up the stairs just inside the entrance -- unless you want to sing or listen to singers, who use microphones in a small space that they don't really need [the staff people must be pretty deaf by now!] But, yes, you can have a lot of fun here!

We made the mistake of saving The Duplex for our last night in Manhattan. I say mistake because of all the places we visited in the city this was by far the most fun. Great singers and really fun people! And if you want to get up and embarrass yourself at the microphone (like ONE of us did) you are more than welcome to!

Over all it's a really friendly place. Do yourself a favor - Don't wait till your last night in town to visit!!
